In softball, its about making plays. How can a softball player make more plays? I get more softball players right about this time of year and I have seen a few things they can add to their game to make more plays.
Here are 3 things a softball player can do to make more plays

1) GAIN ATHLETICISM
Athleticism is the ability to make plays fluidly, more easily, and repeatedly. Plays will be made on offense and defense off of athleticism. To gain athleticism you'll need 3 main factors to be in place - 1) add speed mechanics and effort to your training 2) get plenty of practice and playing time to work on the game aspects 3) eventually make the way you play YOUR way, because each athlete will be different in how they do their thing. I work on the speed mechanics part and the effort part, the rest can be done with practice and games.
Action Step: gain speed this Fall and immediately add it to your new game playing ability
2) DEFENSIVE SPEED
JUMPING OUT is what I say a lot when it comes to these short burst actions I see softball players make. This takes quicker reaction time, efficient motions, as well as effort. A lot of it is done from a squatted and ready position so the ability to move FAST and NOW from this position is big for defensive speed. Going forward, lateral, drop stepping and going back to make a play - all are needed in softball AND are very coachable.
Action Step: speak with a nearby speed coach and mention defensive speed work, hopefully with a glove
3) BASE RUNNING SPEED
Imagine looking and moving like a sprinter once contact is made with the ball, that would be nice, right?? If running the bases is a problem, you're going to have a hard time getting on base - even if you make contact with the ball a lot. Speed mechanics and effort of the upper and lower body motions are all important to improve base running speed.
