Benefit of Fall Training

This time of year, I get a lot of kids who are in their less busy time of year. Softball players, baseball players, Track athletes too. They come in with their goals and we set up a plan for them to make gains during their Fall.
Too many kids over practice and over play.....and they under TRAIN for their sport....meaning they are not getting any faster or stronger for their sport.
Here are 3 things you can benefit from if you train this Fall
For youth athlete training click HERE
1) ADD SPEED AND EXPLOSIVENESS
Having young athletes add speed mechanics training is just like someone playing baseball getting pitching lessons. Doing it your way may work....for a little while, but over time you will need improvement on a skill - including moving faster and making plays with explosive speed. Missing out on gaining speed will mean missing out on making plays, lets not let that happen this Fall.
Action Step: get a hold of a nearby speed coach and set up a plan to improve explosive speed this Fall
2) IMPROVE SPORT STRENGTH
Changing strength levels takes appropriate and progressive training geared towards strength. Over time, and if done consistently, strength levels will absolutely be made. The best way to improve sport strength is 2 things - ask the coach/athlete what needs to be strengthened AND begin a weight lifting program to see where the weaknesses are-----both will tell you where the weaknesses are. Once the weaknesses/imbalances are found there can be strength training plans made and/or Muscle Activation Techniques to make the weaknesses a new strength.
Action Step: begin speaking with your coach to go over areas of weaknesses AND begin a strength training routine with a qualified strength coach
3) RECOVERY FROM INJURY
If an injury took place, even a minor one, its now time to ensure this limitation is optimized. Just time off may help, but it won't actually ensure reduced re-injury. Muscle Activation Techniques and an appropriate weight lifting routine will benefit any youth athlete with a current or previous injury. MAT will optimize the limited areas and the weight lifting will help increase tolerance to forces of the sport - so they work well together!
Action Step: ask about MAT and get and MAT assessment, that will help the recovery process very fast and they add appropriate strength training to improve sport tolerance to forces again
