HELPING OUTFIELDERS MOVE FASTER

HELPING OUTFIELDERS MOVE FASTER

If you play the outfield in baseball or softball, you will have to be able to run hard and make plays on the ball.   At times you will have to look back, all while running hard with a glove - which is a top level skill!  This can be coached and outfielders can all make more plays with this help Here are outfielder drills to help improve their speed: For youth athlete training or help with an injury, please click HERE or contact Will at Will@truetraining.pro LATERAL WALL DRILLS / LATERAL RUNS The first step is learning how to move laterally while looking to the side.  This will precede running hard while looking back and help with the progression.   For these drills all you need is a wall or fence.   With both hands on the wall, turn the body and feet maybe 45 degrees to the side you are working on. Look to the side you have turned too as well.  Move one leg forward to the forward running position and switch the legs using singles or doubles.   Action Step:    Watch the recent Lateral Wall drills posted on True Training Facebook page.  After establishing these drills, apply with these with Lateral Runs - first without and then with a glove.  You can also try out a session and mention this blog.   BACK-LATERAL WALL DRILLS / BACK LATERAL RUNS Similar to Lateral Wall Drills, except this time comfortably look back.  This will simulate the action made in the outfield while tracking a fly ball.  Again, singles and doubles can be used and once that is going well add an arm action.   Action Step:   Watch recent posts on True Training Facebook page showing these drills and apply them with full speed back lateral runs.  You can also try out a session at True Training with this blog.   FULL SPEED APPLICATION WITH GLOVE The next step would definitely be to apply this with full speed motions with a glove.   There will need to be extra space for this, maybe even at your softball or baseball field.   Use the upper and lower body mechanics and effort learned in the Lateral Runs and Back-Lateral Runs in these full speed Lateral Run or Back-Lateral Run with glove drills.   Action Step:   A good way to apply this is to give on-command directions to run to while looking back and throw a ball for the athlete to run hard and track while looking back.  They MUST run hard while doing this drill.   If they commit to running harder while trying to catch the ball, it will transfer to the games.   If you have any questions or would like to set up an appointment, please click HERE or contact me at Will@truetraining.pro  Will Mieding  M.S., CSCS, RTS, MAT Rx 1227 Sagamore Parkway North Suite A 765-230-3770 www.truetraining.pro
