Winter Training Ideas

Many young athletes take advantage of their Winter off-season time and train for their next season sport.  So other than basketball players, wrestlers, swimmers, and some volleyball players....kids are ready to begin training right about now.

Here are 3 things to do this Winter to add to your game

For youth athlete training click HERE

1)  STEP BY STEP SPEED TRAINING

Speed can be taught with the right coaching.  It really comes down to speed mechanics plus coaching effort.  Speed should be taught in a step by step process to ensure the athletes understand each step of moving better with better mechanics.  After that, effort should be added and the speed mechanics can be applied at full speed.  With that process, speed will be improved.

Action Step:  touch base with the nearest speed coach and set up a consultation

2)  CORRECT RESISTANCE TRAINING

Adding force development from resistance training is another option for this Winter.  Something to keep in mind, resistance training is a skill and should be taught first (speed of motion, contraction, awareness of how it should feel, effort, etc) so they don't just move weights and get little out of it.   Once it's taught correctly, begin appropriately progressing the loads, overall volume, along with possibly adding speed to the resistance training exercises.

Action Step:   if not already in the weight lifting program, contact a strength coach to guide your young athlete in how to lift weights correctly and progressively.

3)  APPLY THE NEW SPEED TO INDOOR PRACTICES

A gear way to ensure gains this off-season is to add ways to apply the new speed to your game.  Chances are these will be in indoor practices OR you can do this right away once its warms up.   Use what was taught in the speed training sessions (the speed mechanics along with the effort) in these practices to gain new playing skills and then use them in your next games.

Action Step:   go to practices with a new confidence with your speed and use this new speed to help solidify the gains made this Winter
